Göran K Hansson is the Secretary General of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Nobel Foundation, a member of Academia Europaea, and former Chair of the Nobel Committee for Physiology or Medicine.
Hansson received his MD and PhD from Gothenburg University, Sweden, and is currently Senior Professor of Cardiovascular Research at Karolinska Institute and affiliated with its Department of Medicine and Center for Molecular Medicine. He has been a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Washington in Seattle, visiting professor at Harvard Medical School, and professor of cell biology at Gothenburg University. Hansson´s research deals with vascular immunology and mechanisms of cardiovascular disease.
