Gabriele Micali is a junior group leader at Humanitas Research Hospital, where he leads the Microbial Ecology Lab.

After receiving the Bachelor and Master degrees in Physics at the University of Milan, Micali joined the group of Robert Endres at Imperial College London. There he applied mathematical models and information theory to study how bacteria bias their movement in response to changes in nutrient concentrations (a phenomenon called bacteria chemotaxis). In addition, he developed stochastic models to understand bacterial division control.

After obtaining a PhD in 2017 in Life Sciences from Imperial College London, he joined the Microbial Systems Ecology group led by Martin Ackermann at ETH and Eawag (the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology) in Zurich, where he complemented his theoretical background with experiments in molecular biology, microbial ecology and learned microfluidic techniques to study bacteria.

In 2022, thanks to the Early Career Fellowships of the Human Technopole Foundation, Micali joined Humanitas Research Hospital, where he started his own independent research group.
