Domenico Supino obtained his PhD in Immunology and Immunophathology (Open University program, Milton Keynes, UK) at IRCCS Humanitas Research Hospital in October 2020, under the supervision of Professor Cecilia Garlanda.

As a postdoctoral researcher, Domenico is currently investigating the role of the negative regulators IL-1R8 and IL-1R2. These atypical receptors belong to the IL-1 receptor family and have been show to mitigate inflammation in a broad range of immunopathological conditions. Importantly, IL-1R8 has emerged as an immune checkpoint of NK cells in cancer and viral infections. Extending this concept, Domenico has characterized IL-1R8 in human intrahepatic NK cells, a discrete tissue-resident population involved in immune resistance against liver metastasis from colorectal cancer.

Furthermore, Domenico is studying IL-1R8 in T lymphocytes, aiming to tailor precise genetic and pharmacological tools for the implementation of cancer immunotherapy. Finally, he is exploring membrane associated IL-1R2 as a prognostic and functional marker of circulating monocytic cells in severe infections and sepsis. Domenico joined COVID-19 Task force during SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.
