Julian Swatler obtained his PhD (cum laude) in immunology at Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology in Warsaw, Poland, in 2022. In his PhD work he has identified a new immunosuppressive factor in myeloid leukemias – leukemic extracellular vesicles, that promote hyperactivated regulatory T cells (Swatler et al., Blood Adv, 2022; Swatler et al., Eur J Immunol, 2020) and dysfunctional subsets of effector T cells (Swatler et al., Haematologica, 2023). During his PhD he obtained EMBO Scientific Exchange Grant for a 3 month research visit at laboratory of Prof. Andrea Cossarizza at University of Modena & Reggio Emilia in 2022.

Following PhD, he obtained EMBO Postdoctoral Fellowship to perform postdoctoral studies at Laboratory of Translational Immunology, with Dr. Enrico Lugli. His research is focused on investigating origin of Foxp3+ regulatory T cells in human solid tumors, as well as molecular and microenvironmental mechanisms that drive hyperactivation and stability of these cells in cancer. He does that primarily by applying genomics and multiparameter flow cytometry, including development of novel spectral flow cytometry approaches.
